The landscape of Wordsworth seen through the eyes of the world's oldest continual culture.
Chiang Yee was born in China in 1903, three years before the birth of the Last Emperor. As a child he received a traditional education, studying the Chinese Classics and learning the skills of calligraphy, poetry composition and painting.
By the time he arrived in the English Lake District in 1936, he had already written ‘The Chinese Eye’, a perceptive study of Chinese Art.
The paintings reproduced on this website are taken from ‘The Silent Traveller: A Chinese Artist in Lakeland’, and are reproduced by permission of the artist’s son, Chien-fei Chiang.
The module also contains simple interactive video clips demonstrating the use of a Chinese paint box (the four treasures) and a link to CLEO’s own virtual Chinese paintbox.
Students can also analyse Chiang Yee’s technique by comparing his view of Grasmere with a photograph taken from the same viewpoint.
